Learn to make negative sentences in Korean using 안, 못, and -지 않다.
Negative Sentences
안 + V | 못 + V | V-지 않다
There are three main ways to make negative sentences in Korean: 1. 안 (short negation - choice): • Put 안 before the verb: 안 가요 (I don't go) • For 하다 verbs: 공부 안 해요 (not 안 공부해요) • Meaning: "I won't" or "I don't" (by choice) 2. 못 (short negation - inability): • Put 못 before the verb: 못 가요 (I can't go) • Meaning: "I can't" (unable to) 3. -지 않다 (long negation): • Add -지 않다 to the verb stem: 가지 않아요 • More formal and emphatic than 안 • Can replace 안 in most cases 안 vs 못: • 안 먹어요 = I don't eat / I won't eat (choice) • 못 먹어요 = I can't eat (inability/impossibility)
