Learn the 5 tense/double consonants and their sounds.
Double Consonants (쌍자음)
ㄲ ㄸ ㅃ ㅆ ㅉ
Korean has 5 "tense" or "double" consonants. These are written by doubling the basic consonant. How to pronounce them: • Create tension in your throat • NO puff of air (unlike ㅋ, ㅌ, ㅍ, ㅊ) • The sound is "stopped" or "glottalized" Think of the difference: • ㄱ (g) → ㅋ (k with air) → ㄲ (k with tension, no air) • ㄷ (d) → ㅌ (t with air) → ㄸ (t with tension, no air) English approximation: like the 'k' in 'sky' (not 'key').
